The iPhone and iPod touch devices do not have built-in general file transfer capabilities, so each third-party application that requires access to external files is solely responsible for implementing its own file transfer mechanism.

In the initial version of iSilo™ for iPhone OS, you transfer document files to your device by downloading them from a web server. This means that you must first upload your files to a web server and then use iSilo™ on your device to download the files from the web server to your device. Future updates to iSilo™ for iPhone OS are expected to provide additional flexibility.

The following step-by-step instructions use the built-in web server available on Mac OS X. This means that in order to use these instructions, you must have a Mac OS X system. If your Mac OS X system is not yet setup for Web Sharing, you must also have the access rights to modify the system settings (e.g., have access to the administrator account for the system).

In addition, these instructions assume you have iSilo™ installed on your iPhone or iPod touch device.

Note that the images shown here may differ from your particular setup depending on the version of iSilo™ you have installed and the version of Mac OS X on your system, but the instructions are pretty much the same. The screenshots in this article were taken on a system running Mac OS X 10.5.4.

1. The first thing we must do is make sure that Web Sharing on your Mac OS X system is turned on. To do so, click the System Preferences icon in the Dock.
