When I updated from version 3.11 to version 3.15 of iSilo,
I seem to not be able to access documents on my storage card anymore
from iSilo's document list view.
iSilo 3.11, the initial release version
of iSilo, used the built-in document list control
of Pocket PC to display the document list. Several issues
and limitations of the control necessitated a major change
in iSilo 3.15 to an entirely custom-implemented document
list control. The following describes these issues and limitations:
- The behavior of the built-in document list control of Pocket PC
differs between Pocket PC and Pocket PC 2002:
- Pocket PC: For the internal storage memory, the built-in document
list control shows files within only the "\My Documents" folder
and its immediate subfolders. For storage cards, the control
mimicks this behavior and shows files within only the "\My Documents"
folder of the storage card and the immediate subfolders of the
"\My Documents" folder. When shown in the list, files on storage cards
have a little storage card icon that overlays the file's normal icon
to indicate that the file is on a storage card.
- Pocket PC 2002: For the internal storage memory, the built-in
document list control shows files within only the "\My Documents" folder
and its immediate subfolders, the same behavior as on Pocket PC.
However, for storage cards, the control shows files within only
the subfolders of the top-level folder "\" of the storage card.
- The main issues here is the inconsistency in where
documents are located. Generally, you will want your iSilo
document files stored in the "\My Documents\iSilo" folder
regardless of whether or not they are in the internal storage
memory or on a storage card. For Pocket PC 2002, the
document list control limits files you can see to only those
in top-level folders of the storage card, so files you have
in the "\My Documents\iSilo" folder of your storage card are
inaccessible.
- The built-in document list control does not provide the ability
to set a different folder as the top-level folder. So if you
create a folder within the "\My Documents\iSilo" folder and place
some files in it, those files will not show up in the list.
- The built-in document list control does not provide the ability
to hide the date or size columns.
iSilo 3.15 uses an entirely custom-implemented
document list control to address the issues described above
and to provide additional features:
- For both Pocket PC and Pocket PC 2002, the behavior becomes
identical.
- You can set the top-level folder to either "My Documents"
or "My Documents\iSilo":
- If you set the top-level folder to "My Documents", you can see
all files within the "My Documents" folder and those of its
immediate subfolders. This applies for files stored either
in the internal storage memory or on storage cards.
- If you set the top-level folder to "My Documents\iSilo", you
can see all files within the "My Documents\iSilo" folder and those
of its immediate subfolders. This applies for files stored either
in the internal storage memory or on storage cards. This
is the default top-level folder in which iSilo starts.
This allows you to create subfolders within the "My Documents\iSilo"
folder for organizing your iSilo document files. With
the built-in Pocket PC document list control, you would not be
able to do this.
- You can show and hide any combination of the file extension, date,
and size so that for example, you can hide the file extension and size
to leave more room to display longer filenames.
- Internally, the custom-implemented document list allows
iSilo to keep better track of the settings for a file
when you move or rename it.
- Going forward, the custom-implemented document list control
will provide the ability to add additional customized features.
If you are using Pocket PC 2002, you will notice differences
when going from version 3.11 to 3.15:
- You can not set the top-level folder to the root folder "\".
- Because of the previous point, on Pocket PC 2002,
iSilo's document list does not show files in any root
subfolders except the "My Documents" folder. So, for example, the list
will not show files in the "\Business" folder of your storage card, but
it will show files in the "\My Documents\Business" folder of your
storage card. But since you can not use other applications
to view iSilo documents, you should not generally
need to store iSilo document files in other folders.
If you do, then you can still always open the file from within
"File Explorer" as long as you associate iSilo
with the ".pdb" extension and the document file has that extension.
- You are recommended to place your iSilo document
files in either the "\My Documents\iSilo" folder or its
direct subfolders. For example, if you had iSilo
document files in your "\Business" folder of your storage card,
you are recommended to use "File Explorer" to move them to the
"\My Documents\iSilo\Business" folder of your storage card.
